Stephen Sondheim Theater Info
The Sondheim Theatre has seen many changes in its long and colorful past. Through all of the phases of the Broadway Theatre district the Sondheim Theatre has been right with all of the changes. The Sondheim has been a go-go club as well as a disco in the late 1970's but no more importantly the Sondheim has caught fire with the recent booking of "Anything Goes". Anything Goes has received some praised and seems as though the Sondheim is back on its way to prominence in the most competitive Theater district in the World. Designed in the Neo-classical style by architects Paul R. Allen and Ingalls & Hoffman, it was built by and named for actor-producer Henry Miller. His financial backers were Elizabeth Milbank Anderson, owner of the lot at 124 West 43rd, and Klaw & Erlanger. The original theatre had 950 seats. It opened on April 1, 1918 with the play The Fountain of Youth. It was the first air-conditioned theater in Manhattan.
